GCSE Maths Revision Guide
Surds
Simplifying surds and rationalising denominators. This free GCSE Maths module combines short explanations, worked examples, flashcard-style recall, and timed practice so students can revise the topic without creating an account.
Foundation Skills
What is a Surd?
A root that cannot be written as a whole number or simple fraction. e.g. โ2.
Multiplying Surds
Formula: โa ร โb = โab
Example: โ2 ร โ3 = โ6
Dividing Surds
Formula: โa รท โb = โ(a / b)
Example: โ10 รท โ2 = โ5
Squares and Roots
Squaring a square root cancels it out!
Example: (โ7)ยฒ = 7
Higher Skills
Simplifying Surds
Find a square factor (4, 9, 16, 25...) and take its root out.
Example: โ75 = โ(25 ร 3) = โ25 ร โ3 = 5โ3
Adding/Subtracting
You can only combine "like" surds. 5โ2 + 3โ2 = 8โ2.
Rationalising Denominators
Multiply top and bottom by the root to remove it from the bottom.
Example: 1 / โ2 = (1 ร โ2) / (โ2 ร โ2) = โ2 / 2
Expanding Surd Brackets
Use FOIL just like algebra.
Example: (2 + โ3)(2 - โ3) = 4 - 2โ3 + 2โ3 - 3 = 1
